Just the thought of getting headbutted can make you cringe. But how do you know if the person you’re engaging with is willing to go so far as attacking you with their head?
It doesn’t matter what size they are, or if they look intimidating. An attack from someone using their head is a weapon no matter if it comes from a kid, women or husky, muscular man – it can cause damage from anyone if you are hit, plain an simple.
The skull is a hard, strong natural weapon – even more so because it takes place up close and targets your face or skull!
In this blog post, we’ll cover a few ways to protect yourself from a headbutt in a variety of situations. This is an important piece of self-defense advice, because you never know when you’ll find yourself in a dangerous situation where you need to use your head and avoid getting knocked out.
Before any physical actions take shape, the best approach to protect yourself is walk away or immediately avoid a confrontation from your potential assailant quickly.
It may sound odd I am saying this, but hands down, the best thing you can do to avoid getting into a brawl is to keep your hands to yourself.
Fortunately, there are certain strategies we can employ in order to reduce our risk of getting headbutted and keep yourself safe at the same time. And it doesn’t matter what type of headbutter they happen to be; these tactics will have a significant impact on them.
Before anything else, if someone makes you feel anxious or looks like they are going to start something with you – this can be loud yelling and negative demeanor or overly violent suggestive action such as walking aggressively towards you. You want to avoid the point of them getting in your face or even worse, physically touch you.
Hands should never be touching someone else without consent and should never be placed on a person in the first place without good reason.
This post is about when things start looking like someone is going to get violent and you would have no choice but to use your hands.
What is a Headbutt?
A headbutt is an unarmed attack where one person bumps their head into the other person’s. It’s a common tactic in fights and nightclubs because it’s an easy way to sneakily win.
What Are the Effects of a Headbutt?
A headbutt can cause serious damage to the head and face. It can fracture your skull, dislocate your jaw, and cause a concussion. In extreme cases, it can even kill you.
How Can I Defend Against a Headbutt?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, but we will cover some strategies to help you protect yourself.
First, Be aware of the situation.
If you know you’re going to be in a fight, be aware of the headbutting tactics that are being used. Learn how to defend yourself against headbutts so you’re not caught off guard.
What you can do to protect yourself from this potentially dangerous situation.

So if you’re talking to the attacker, the very first thing should still be not to encourage a fight, but you should ALWAYS try to defuse the situation.
Before going into any attack moves, bring up your hands (important) while trying to defuse or de-escalate.
Now, there are several different types of moves that people use, but one thing they all have in common is that they should not be seen coming. If you need a perfect example of what I’m talking about, just watch how Nick Drossos handles headbutts.
- Now, there’s a few ways of headbutting. Some self defense instructors grab and either clinch the neck to throw their headbutt or they’re going to grab the person before.
- The instant you grab them, make sure you don’t pull them in and because if they flinch you are going to get headbutted instead. So one way, if you’re going to headbutt is actually move towards them while keeping your hands up.
- Then, boom. All you do is explode forward with your hip, knees, and whole body… Boom. Basically lean your body forward, engage your core and hitting with the top of the head right into the facial area.
- Use your head again and as often as possible. And, as you can from the clip above, he is using his entire body behind the strike.
Drive the headbutt with your whole body and your core
You are going to be hitting with the top of your head into the facial area or if the ear, jaw or smack on the nose.
This is doing a lot of damage. So this is a great strike to use in the street.. But again you have to be in close quarter range.. If you guys want to learn a lot more of these type of striking, go visit, our striking fundamentals or common attacks.

Keep A Safe Distance
Important: If you decide make your first strike, then make it count. Your first try, guys has to be hard and has to be fast – it has to send the message to them you mean business, and if possible, it has to knock them out.
The last thing you want to do is turn this into a brawl when you strike them and they comes back strike you – this is not good. You want to hit fast and hard and you want to take him out, so you can finish it.
Raise Your Hands and Employ The Distancing Technique
The first step to protecting yourself to raise your arms and place them in from of you and the opponent before they strike or become violent. The best way to do this is by using a simple self-defense move before an actual strike takes place.
At the same time, you don’t want to stay in their chosen space or stance, what you should do is instinctively bring up your hand to try to create some space and safer distance and light touch/contact with them using your hands just in case they try to headbutt, this way you could easily feel it coming just with your arm and hands.
It doesn’t have to be a push or hard touch, use just enough to create a stick so as they move, your arm will also move with their motion so that way you will know immediately if they lean forward. This is as close/far as you should be. The last thing you want to allow them to control things or play their game.
So, while trying to cool things down, at the same time (they won’t realize it) you should be setting yourself up to strike; and always know where their feet are, what they are doing, where moving, and if they are holding a weapon.
- Continue trying to talking to them, while you keep checking their pose – head to toe because just with a blink of an eye they can strike.
- Look for their friends or other attackers – check your environment
- Look for any improvised weapons because it they attack, it’s too late for you to figure it out and find it in the middle of the fight.
- Move as they move while keeping your hands in the defense position. Why? You want to be able to move in a manner that you can always see their hands wherever they move. Even if it’s just a small step, this will help you exactly where they move to keep a constant contact and make sure you always are aware of where their feet are.
- Never cross your center line and give them a chance for sucker punch from behind or maybe where they can get you in a headlock or even try to stab you. S
- By keeping with this technique, if you decide to, you can release and strike from this position and quickly go for their throat or go up with an elbow strike. You can also strike low to the groin and lower body, but the initial thing to keep in mind is to always have up your hands up.
If you want to defend from someone without worrying about whether or not they’re going to pounce on you, this simple technique will work wonders for you!

It’s no secret that headbutting is a common tactic in nightclubs and fights and it can be very dangerous as well as hard to defended against.
Use Your Arms to Protect Your Head and face
If you’re able to block the headbut, use your arms to protect your head. This will protect you from being hit in the face. If you happen not to block it, have your hand up in front of your face and protect it from the impact of the headbutt.
Evade or Block the Attack with a Foot Step
If you are able to avoid or block the headbutt with a foot step, it will reduce the impact of the attack.
If you are hurt, do not hesitate to get medical attention – headbutting is a dangerous attack that can result in serious injury or death for you as well as the assailant.
